Synopsis

Pathfinders role play a situation where they must decide who will be left to repopulate the earth after nuclear destruction. Each person must try to convince the group that their character must be allowed on the rocket to safety.

Through participation in this Pursuit, the Pathfinder will:

  1. Participate in a role play activity
  2. Portray a fictitious character
  3. Work together as a group to make decisions
  4. Reflect on the value of an individual

Scripture Focus

Memory Verse

Matthew 7:2
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

In life we are often labelled as one thing or another. Those labels don’t describe the real person we are underneath. God has made us full of unique gifts, and sin has made us full of hidden habits and vices. The gift of God is that He accepts us as we are when we fall on His grace and accept His gift of salvation.

Preperation

  1. Fold and staple each character’s page of attributes so that the bottom attribute is sealed and stapled shut first. Then fold the paper so that the middle attribute is stapled shut so that only the top attribute can be read. (It sounds complicated, but experiment and you’ll work out a way to do it!) The idea is that each person should be able to know only one attribute at a time about their character. You could also just cut them up and hand out one attribute at a time as the Pursuit progresses.
Materials:
  • A pen for each group
  • Photocopy all Appendix material

Outline

1. The Pursuit can take up to nine people, five male and four female characters. If you are unable to make up these numbers, make sure you have at least seven in the group to get the ‘feel’ of the game. Some girls may choose to play male characters and visa versa, but it is best to have them stay in character.

2. Once they are in their group, read the introduction story of the Wagga Rocket. (You will have a table of each character and all of the information about each. Keep that a secret! You will find one page for each character in the Appendix with three pieces of information about themselves. NOTE: Feel free to alter the information in the characters to suit the age level of your Pathfinders.

3. Have each person look at the first piece of information about themselves and have time to introduce themselves (make up names, etc…) to the group and argue about why they should be allowed on the rocket.

4. Then give the second piece of information and repeat the process.

5. Then they must make a written vote of who will be allowed on the rocket. You will find a sheet to record the voting in the Appendix.

6. Then give them the third piece of information, after which they will do their final vote.

7. Then do the debrief for the Pursuit.

NB: If you rush through this Pursuit, your Pathfinders will lose the value of the interaction. Groups sometimes find it difficult and slow to ‘get into character’. They will usually try to hurry a decision without the whole group agreeing on the decision. The other thing to watch out for is a person who will say, “I’m no good, I’ll just stay out.” That is not acceptable! They must try to get themselves in, no matter how bad they think they are!

Debrief

Leaders, be sure to follow up on discussing when and how the Pathfinders saw the memory text in action throughout this Pursuit.

Appendix

Appendix:
The Wagga Rocket

Our solar system has misfired and all the planets have changed orbit so that they’ll hit earth all at the same time. (In about an hour or so.) All life will be destroyed, but the earth will be OK after a couple of months or so.

The only thing spared will be the moon. Neither the Americans, Russians or the Kiwis know that this will happen and there are no contingency plans. However, there is hope! You and a few people happen to be on a tour of the secret space station in Wagga Wagga, NSW.

The Aussie scientists at Wagga have cleverly realised the problem and have a space shuttle (the ‘Wagga Rocket’) ready to launch which will take a small crew to the moon until Earth is ready to be re-stocked with people.

The problem is that there are only four spots left in the shuttle. So you spend time getting to know all the people in your group and you find out some interesting information about them.

You have a short time to decide which four of you are the most suitable to survive and begin mankind again. You should argue for yourself based on the information you know about the character you have been given. You keep your own name, but everything else you know about your character is in the envelope.

There will be two rounds of voting. At the end of each round, as a group, you MUST make a decision and write down which four people will enter the shuttle. The end decision will be final. The four people playing the characters who enter the shuttle will receive prizes.

How to do it:

You will receive information about yourself and your character. Your job is to ‘take on’ this character as if it was yourself and argue why you should be allowed on the rocket.

You will be given information on your character in parts. You will have 10 minutes to introduce your character and argue why you should be allowed on the rocket with your first piece of information.

You will have another 10 minutes to share your second piece of information, and then another 5 minutes to vote as a group and decide who will go on the rocket.

THEN you will be shown a third piece of information which may change your vote. You will given another 10 minutes to share this information, and another 5 minutes to vote.
